Opalescence® Teeth Whitening Treatment Options

By Dr. Treiber on May 26, 2014

A young woman with a beautifully white smileAs you get older, you may have noticed that your teeth have become stained or discolored. This can happen because of a variety of reasons - the food or beverages you’ve consumed, medicine you may have taken, or just simply age itself.  But no matter what the cause is, there are ways to help.

Teeth whitening treatments are a popular, simple, and non-invasive way to restore your tooth enamel to a brilliant white color. These days, there are many in-office and at-home teeth whitening treatments to choose from. Cosmetic dentist Bruce E. Treiber offers Opalescence® teeth whitening systems at his Canton officefor the brightest and best results.

What Is Opalescence® Teeth Whitening?

Opalescence® is a series of ADA-approved syringe or tray-delivered tooth whitening systems developed by Ultradent Products Inc. and sold only to licensed and qualified dental professionals like Dr. Treiber. Opalescence is a unique product based around the active ingredient carbamide peroxide, and comes in several varieties made for in-office and take-home care, including:

  • Opalescence® - Ultradent’s primary take-home teeth whitening treatment, Opalescence® is available in original and PF formulas in a variety of flavors. This product uses whitening trays that can be filled with pre-loaded syringes of the carbamide peroxide-based whitening formula, available in strengths ranging from 10 percent to 35 percent. The unique formula is sticky and viscous, which means that it will stay firmly on patients’ teeth without migrating to gums and other soft tissue areas where it could cause irritation.
  • Opalescence® Boost 40 percent - For patients looking for something more powerful, there is Opalescence® Boost. This in-office treatment features a more potent 40 percent concentration of carbamide peroxide, requiring the supervision of your cosmetic dentist. But because it is chemically activated, there is no need for UV light, which makes the treatment gentler on teeth and gums than traditional in-office teeth whitening treatments.
  • Opalescence® Go™ - This is a convenient take-home kit consisting of a series of whitening trays pre-loaded with a 10 percent or 15 percent hydrogen peroxide formula. This option is best suited for patients who are seeking a simple and hassle-free solution and more subtle results.
  • Opalescence® Toothpaste - For maintenance after your teeth whitening treatment, patients can keep up their bright smiles with Opalescence® toothpaste in original and PF formulas.

Opalescence® PF products are notable for being made with potassium nitrate and fluoride. Potassium nitrate is a compound that can help alleviate symptoms of heightened tooth sensitivity that often come with traditional whitening treatments, while fluoride can help strengthen enamel. This makes the Opalescence® products a great choice for patients with sensitive teeth who still want dazzling white teeth without resorting to more dramatic treatments like porcelain veneers, which require the removal of some of the tooth’s enamel.
